The Real Thing

I saw this picture on Bing a couple days ago and it reminded me of my childhood. :)

Growing up we always had a real Christmas tree.  It was something that we always did as a family...go hunt the perfect tree.  We would always load up on the four-wheelers or the mule with chain saw in hand and head out.  Usually it was around my birthday or right after since real trees always dry out so fast and make a mess.  A couple weeks of having one of those trees up is long enough (for the adults of the household anyways).  It was always an adventure finding the right tree that everyone agreed on and that didn't have any bald or dead spots around it.  Then came the fun part... getting it in the house and in the stand bucket.  Yes, you read right BUCKET.  Forget those fancy smancy tree stands, we used a 5 gallon feed bucket around the Deal household.  Put the tree in the middle of the bucket, fill that bad boy up with large rocks and then a tink of water to help hinder the fast drying process.  Redneck NO...Country YES! LOL Hey why fix what's not broken...right?  I remember one year we did the whole process and when we got up the next morning something in the bucket had shifted and our tree had fell over and water was all over the floor.  My mom had just gotten new ornaments that year too and a few were broken...she was not a happy camper. :(  I would love to have a real tree but they are very messy and Lincoln's allergies can't handle all of that but I have the memories of childhood and they are great!
