Garden Planning 2018 and DIY Wreath

This year I set out determined to have a magazine worthy garden.  I was sick of fighting weeds, looking at boring rows and being over whelmed with the idea of "work" when I really enjoy gardening and the rewards I can reap from it.  Early this year I was up late diagramming and coloring my own little garden plan that I plan on bringing to life!  Below is my plan of 6 raised beds and each bed has all the items I plan on growing, not pictured is the arbor and entrance near my chicken coop that is going to be the pretty entrance to my raised bed garden.  I have started the process and as soon as everything is finished up and green I'll be sure to post about it and also how closely I ended up following the below plan. ;)

As soon as my Christmas decor came down my front and back door were naked of any decor.  My grapevine wreath from the past 2 years was tired and I was uninspired by it so I set out to Canton in February to find the perfect decor to put together a new inspired wreath.  I didn't know what I wanted but I did know what I DIDN'T want.  When I stumbled on some bicycle wheels out in the "junk" section of Canton the lightening struck....A BICYCLE RIM wreath!  I got a small to medium old bicycle wheel for $5 and picked up some nice floral at Paul Michael on the way out.

I love how it turned out and since this picture I added a little welcome plaque at the top and its the perfect finish.  I love how this ordinary item was able to provide another useful purpose and really cheap!

Travel Plans 2018

We are well into the new year at this point and all my travel plans have been pretty much finalized for this year as well as some that I have high hopes for.  I hoped to get this post out before my first vacation happened but that didn't happened!  This year I have some big travel plans for both Hendrik and I and me and my Mom.

  • March 13th -20th Hendrik and I traveled to El Salvador.  More info coming on this as we have been back a week now and are fully recovered.

  • June- My Mom and I will be traveling to Paris, France, Venice/Florence/ and Rome, Italy

  • September- Hendrik and I will make the annual pilgrimage to Mexico for his birthday weekend.

  • Winter- vague but I REALLY want to go skiing/snowboarding this coming up Winter I've talked about it for a couple years now and I told Hendrik that for my birthday this year I for sure want to book a long weekend hitting the slopes.

Those are my big plans but I also want to make several smaller weekend/ day trips to

  • Waco- Magnolia everything
  • Fredericksburg- wine and Oktoberfest
  • Oklahoma- Hiking and visit the Pioneer Woman's town
  • Louisiana- Baton Rouge and New Orleans
  • Hot Springs, AR- sightseeing and antiquing

We shall see where the road takes me but I'm always up for some traveling!  I really want to try to take at least one weekend trip to a new sight around our area each month so I'm not always thinning...man I need to make a trip here, or there, and year after year it doesn't happen!

BMT: Austin Trip

Saturday January 20th was my 3rd time to travel to Austin for a BMT seminar with Duane Ludwig himself and the second time in a row to train with Bas Rutten.  These men are such legends and so fun to learn from.  This was my first seminar as an orange belt and I earned my first patch on the orange level from my coach!  We usually travel down the night before as a team and stay in a hotel but this seminar was later that day and instead of wasting time we decided to leave at 6 am and just drive down and back all in the same day.

Dutch kickboxing and striking legend Bas Rutten
our team with both Bas and Duane
everyone who attended
I always have the best training partner, Jacki, and we have so much fun!

After the seminar our team was invited to eat Thai food with both host coaches as well as the coach at BMT Austin, Coach Alex.  His wife works at the Thai food restaurant and it was so good!

After eating it was starting to get pretty late like 8 pm and we still had to make the drive back so all the girls piled up in my car and we headed out.  It was a quiet drive home as we were all exhausted from the intense training and long day but it is always worth it!

Kid Rock Concert

For our friend Paul's 30th birthday his wife got tickets to see Kid Rock at the Choctaw Casino in Durant, OK on January 26th.  We drove up that Friday afternoon to check in and get decked out for the concert.  We had never been to that casino and it was really awesome.  It is pretty much like a cruise ship on land with a ton of things to do other than gambling like the pool, bowling, and arcade, not to mention the 7 or 8 restaurants on site.  We ate dinner at the casino buffet which we all agreed wasn't that great for the price and then headed over to the concert hall to get our seats.

Kid Rock put on an amazing show and we had so much fun singing along to our favorites and seeing just how white trash the outfits could get. LOL

After the concert Lauren spent a few dollars playing losing at blackjack and then we played a few games of bowling before turning in close to 2 am.  I sucked at bowling and Hendrik thought it was awesome that there was finally a sport I wasn't good at.  I took the coaching well and did improve by the end of the night.

This was a great night away with our best friends and much needed time just having fun with each other.

Book Review: Her Final Breath

The second book by Robert Dugoni in the Tracy Crosswhite series is just as good as the first.  This book is a little bit more sinister but the intrigue is all around.  You have no idea who to suspect and until the end you are set on the culprit being someone else until the final chapter or two you are stunned to find the killer!  These books are so relaxing and interesting and have a great strong leading female character that give inspiration and strength to us all!  Not only do you have action and adventure but also romance.  Check out this series if you haven't yet.  I'm currently reading the 3rd book in this series and can't wait to read them all!

Homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite has returned to the police force after the sensational retrial of her sister’s killer. Still scarred from that ordeal, Tracy is pulled into an investigation that threatens to end her career, if not her life.
A serial killer known as the Cowboy is killing young women in cheap motels in North Seattle. Even after a stalker leaves a menacing message for Crosswhite, suggesting the killer or a copycat could be targeting her personally, she is charged with bringing the murderer to justice. With clues scarce and more victims dying, Tracy realizes the key to solving the murders may lie in a decade-old homicide investigation that others, including her captain, Johnny Nolasco, would prefer to keep buried. With the Cowboy on the hunt, can Tracy find the evidence to stop him, or will she become his next victim?

Book Review: My Sister's Grave

Around a month ago I needed to find some good but cheap books and of course I turned to Amazon.  I stumbled upon Robert Dugoni's, My Sister's Grave, and read the synopsis and OMG I had to snatch it up.  I couldn't read this book fast enough.  I looked forward to going to bed each night just so I could read more.  You really are kept on your toes the entire time and I love the character of Tracy, the leading female detective that is bad to the bone.  I was even more excited to find out that once I finished this book there was more in store as it was just the first of a series that currently has 6 books. In the first book of the series Tracy heads back to her hometown to finally uncover what really happened to her sister 20 years ago after her sister's remains where discovered in a shallow grave.  What happens next you'll never guess!  For the price these books pack a lot of punch!

Tracy Crosswhite has spent twenty years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House—a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder—is the guilty party. Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers.
When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking. As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past—and open the door to deadly danger.

Currently reading the 3rd book in this series!  They are so good!

Book Review: The Magnolia Story

Hendrik's mom and I love Fixer Upper...I mean who DOESN'T!!! Chip and Jo are so relatable and down-to-earth it's almost impossible not to fall in love with them as well as all their do-gooding and designs.  I'm obsessed with all their stuff and it makes me want to know about the people behind the show.  At Christmas I was shopping for family and stumbled onto their newly released book at Target.  I thought it a great gift for Roelie.  She read it and just raved about it saying I had to read it.  I borrowed her copy and took it on our recent trip to El Salvador and read it in less than 12 hours.  It was not too long, an easy read, and I could relate to so much of their personal struggles and triumphs.  I hope that by reading this I can take away some lessons that Jo had to learn to let go of the little things and realize how many big important things you can appreciate and be happy with.  If you haven't read this then I highly suggest you snag your copy now.  I have also already pre-ordered Jo's upcoming cookbook Magnolia Table!

Synopsis from Amazon:

These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, like—Who are these people? What’s the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become America’s new best friends.
The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.
They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.
In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:
  • The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby
  • Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children
  • When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck
  • Joanna’s breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home
  • Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple
  • Memories and photos from Chip and Jo’s wedding
  • The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do
  • The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way
And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? “Oh yeah,” says Joanna. “He was, and still is, my first fixer upper.”

Are you ready to see your fixer upper?

Book Review: Everything I Never Told You

I had heard all about Everything I Never Told You from the blogger and Instagram world so thought I'd give it a go.  I don't usually read these sort of books and I felt let down by the book.  I guess if you like that sort of family analysis in a book you would like it but I found that the entire book lacked a lot of intrigue especially seeing the ending was just sort of faded out and there was never a big punch line.  Overall it was very boring to me.  Each character is shown from their point of view and you can definitely understand the story line I just like a lot more action.  I don't think I will be reading any more of Celeste Ng's books...as I have read the synopsis of her other book, Little Fires Everywhere, and it isn't intriguing to me either.  I am glad that I ventured out and tried another "genre" of book and the writing is really good so the author is definitely talented just not my taste.

So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos.

A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Currently reading the third novel in the Tracy Crosswhite series, In the Clearing by Robert Dugoni!
