Hola! We just made it back from Mexico for our annual last vacation of the year and a birthday celebration for Hendrik so....let's get into it.
Our trip really started Tuesday night as we rushed to leave work and home by 530 to make it to the chiropractor in Rockwall before he closed at 7. After we saw the chiropractor we headed over to Plano to eat supper with Lesly at McAllisters and then decided to see a movie. We went to a cinemark movie theater that had amazing seats and saw The Simple Favor. It was really good and reminded me of the movie Gone Girl. After the movie it was after 1130 so we set out to get a hotel room. I figured we would have no problems getting the airport Marriott but they were booked as well as all the others around. We finally lucked out and found a room at the Westin.

We shuttled to the airport around 6 Wednesday morning. We flew out at 9 and arrived in Cabo early at around 1030. We were in and out of the airport, had our rental car, and were on the road headed to the hotel with in the hour. We even saw some people in the airport from Winnsboro. Small world! It was an easy 30 minute drive to the hotel. We stayed at the Esperanza, an Auberge Resort. We were shown the resort and had lunch while they were finishing up preparing our room. We were in our room around 130 but it was rainy all day this day. We had an awesome room that had tons of space and a bath tub to die for. We both washed the travel off of us and then settled in for a nap. After my nap I went to the gym and then we just explored the resort before having dinner there at a Mexican buffet that was set up. It was good food but not $200 good which is what the bill ended up being for two buffett dinners. We decided there and then that the remainder of dinners would be eaten off the hotel property. Once we were back in our room we lounged and rested but for a full day of sun and fun on Thursday.
Every night the turn down service put a different handmade character on our bed. I brought them all home to Case |
We woke up and did some work while the coffee and some toast was delivered. We lounged in bed for a bit and then headed to the pool around 930. The rain was gone and the sun was out and I took full advantage. Hendrik didn’t come down until close to noon. We played out and swam until around 130 before heading to the room and getting prepared to go to the spa. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the spa. We both got a 90 minute massage and then I had a 90 minute aloe wrap and Hendrik got a 75 minute Mexican beer facial. After the spa we changed clothes and headed into town for dinner. WE ate at Barracrudas which was really good. We walked around the marina area a bit before headed back to the hotel and making a stop at Wal-Mart. Hendrik wasn’t feeling well and didn’t want another El Salvador situation so we stopped to get him some medicine and also bug spray and sunscreen. When we got back to our car I noticed the paint around the door frame was chipped and really raw feeling. It looked like someone had tried to break in. We got back to the hotel with further inspection and someone did indeed try prying the door open. Once back in our room we tried watching a movie I fell asleep but Hendrik finished it.
Had breakfast in the room and then set out with snorkel gear and some extra towels to explore for the day. Our first stop was Santa Maria Bay to try our hand at snorkeling. Hendrik was still feeling a bit under the weather and the hour and half he was in the sun the prior day left him very sunburned so he sat in the shade while I tried it out. I didn’t see anything and also think that at the beach area isn’t the best for snorkeling. I know this is a prime snorkel spot but maybe would be better if you were dumped out with a both further out in the bay and closer to the rocks where the fish would live. The water did feel amazing and so I got out and got rid of the snorkel gear and went back for a cool swim. After I had my fill we loaded back up and drove North to Todos Santos. Little did we know that we were VERY close to this town last year when we came North to surf. We had lunch at Barajas Tacos then walked around to see the little town most known for Hotel California…yep the one you are singing about now. LOL We made it back to the hotel around 3 that afternoon. Just in time for a nap and a workout before we headed into town to eat at Mi Casa. This restaurant was so fun and had really good food. Looking back it was for sure our best meal in Cabo this trip. After eating and making our way back to the hotel it was pretty late so we lounged a bit then hit the hay.
Saturday and Sunday September 22nd and 23rd, 2018
Saturday was so simple and lazy and so was Sunday. Saturday we reserved one of the pool cabanas that we stayed in all day long. Dipping in and out of the pool, reading books and magazines, and I listened to podcasts. I didn’t feel like heading out after such a relaxing day so we decided to just order room services that night and be bums. Bumming it continued through Sunday. I went to the pool until after lunch then stayed in the room the rest of the day while Hendrik NEVER left the bed except to head to the pool around 5. We had dinner reservations at Hacienda Cocina and Cantina that night so left out in plenty of time. I thought this was going to be a restaurant where not only could we view Lands End but also enjoy it all during sunset. We had a great view of Lands End but didn’t have a good view of the sunset. We did have a nice relaxing last dinner though before returning to the hotel.

D day- departure day from Cabo, we were up and ready to hit the road by 8 to catch our noon flight back to Dallas.
Overall we had a great trip to Cabo like we do every year. I was so excited to stay at the Esperanza which is rated as one of the top Mexican resorts this year from Travel Leisure. I can definitely see why the resort is number 1. The staff literally go above and beyond for the guests. They even called our rental car company the night our car was damaged to check on the policy for us. We didn’t ask them too and we knew we had full coverage insurance but it was nice of them to take those steps and prepare us or even allow us to get a head start on taking the steps to getting it taken care of if we didn’t have coverage. They really made themselves accessible and made us feel important. The downside to the resort is that the main restaurant that it is known for the cliffside Cocina was closed for renovations during our stay and the food we did have on the resort was good but definitely not as good as the price. The spa and gym were great services that we were able to take full advantage of. Another downside to the resort is that there were a lot of “groups” there. The last few times we have came the hotel is dead and we really love that. Besides Hendrik’s birthday being in September and it being a great time to get away a bit from work that is the main reason we chose Mexico in September because of the shoulder season. This resort the pool was packed daily and it sort of felt like Summer still. We feel that Cabo has really gone up in its prices over the 4 years we have came here. I think going forward we will try a few different other Mexican destinations in our future September trips. We loved getting to relax and unwind with each other and experience new things in a place that we have came to so often over the years.
Stay tuned for what is next…although this is our last international trip of the year I have several weekend getaways that I aim to accomplish that are only a few hours drive away from home.
